…and Drake’s “Funny Bones” Just Fell to Second String.

For a long time in the snack game, it seemed to be that if you wanted to ensure brand longevity, you didn’t mess with success. An Oreo should always taste like an Oreo, for example, or a Twinkie should always be made of yellow cake with a thin ribbon of shelf-stablized powdered sugar flavored goo piped down the middle. But just as Nabisco has shown us the way by introducing ever single crazed fever dream of a flavor combination they can think of in the familiar Oreo form, so goeth Hostess.

While we’ve seen a few tweaks to the Twinkie formula since the company recovered from its 2013 bankruptcy (including the very favorably reviewed “Banana” iteration, the Twinkie’s original flavor), none have set the snack-blogger world on fire quite like the announcement of this classic flavor combination: Chocolate flavored Twinkie cake filled with peanut butter frosting. From the press release:

“With Chocolate Peanut Butter Twinkies, we have paired America’s favorite flavor combination with America’s most beloved snack cake,” said Burke Raine, Hostess Brands Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “This peanut butter-filled treat comes on the heels of our recent introduction of Hostess Chocolate Cake Twinkies and is another a prime example of our efforts to embrace consumer flavor trends.”

The Chocolate Peanut Butter Twinkies will feature “the delectable pairing of sweet and salty flavors, as well as an irresistible creamy peanut butter texture.” The new Twinkie is already headed to Wal-Mart stores nationwide, in both single and multi-serve packs, in case sitting around and eating snack cakes with friends is an activity you enjoy.

It’s hard not to feel a few pangs of guilt when we consider the real victim of Hostess’ foray into the preservative-rich shelf-stable chocolate cake and peanut butter game: New England based Drake’s, whose waxy peanut butter filled “Funny Bones” chocolate snack cakes have been a staple in Yankee fat kid lunch boxes for generations.

As for us grownup fat kids? We’ll be deep-frying one of these new chocolate peanut butter Twinkies almost immediately.
